Have you seen Cuteoverload.com lately? If not, you should definitely check that site out if you like cute animals, because they have a lot of those.
This site is a perfect counterpoint to cuteoverload. It’s called Ugly Overload, and has pictures of… well, ugly animals like the one on the left.
I like this site a lot because it gives you cool information about the animals.
For example, this bit about Pugs:
Most sources agree that they hail from China, dating back to before 400 B.C.
The Chinese of those by-gone years bred dogs for wrinkles and markings that looked like Chinese characters. In the case of the pug, they were bred for facial wrinkles that formed a W, which resembles the Chinese character for ‘prince’.
I found this great article online on the Everett Herald website. It appears there are two less stupid drunk criminals roaming the streets. These two fellows were found sleeping on piles of loot they had stolen from a Fred Meyers storage area. They were pretty easy to find because all police had to do was follow a literal trail of debris to their location, less than two hundred feet away.
The dude on the right has a grill cover blanket, and the the guy on the left apparently fell asleep after trying to put together a hammock. Awww! Isn’t that cute! You can see the directions right next to his back.
If you’re wondering who took the pictures, I’ll tell you: it was the cops. They spent 20 minutes taking pictures of the crime scene and then woke these two boys up my reading them their rights. “We believe alcohol was involved,” Monroe police spokeswoman Debbie Willis said. “I’d say a lot of alcohol was involved.”
According to a just-released article from the Entertainment Software Association, 40% of all US gamers are women. Take that, Guys! I… Oh wait. I am a guy, and so I must also take that, too. But that’s ok because Girl Gamers Rock! My daughter is a gamer. She is proud of it. And I am proud of the fact that she enjoys playing.
Look, guys, I have seen lots of articles that say we guy gamers look down on girl gamers, because it blows our collective (sometimes narrow) mind that anyone who doesn’t belong to the eternal brotherhood of… well… brothers, would know what a joystick was much less use one. The truth is that there are a lot of girls out there who could kick our digital behinds in the time that it takes us to say “Huh?” and scratch ourselves. So, give them a break, ok?! And encourage your sons and daughters and your girlfriends and wives to play! Because she’s going to be a lot happier with you buying Gears of War 2 if she’s played the first one and taken you to school with it.
And if you happen to be a game designer, it’s clear you need to find a way to make games that cater to this population.
And ladies, there are a lot of guys out there who just enjoy games. We don’t care who you are. We just want to play.
Ok? Nuff said.
In other news from the article, the average age of gamers has risen to 35!
65% of American households play computer or video games
One in four gamers is over 50
41% of Americans expect to purchase a game this year
And why not?! This is the shirt of one of the best superheros in all of DC. Sure, the others are more popular, but who would you rather be if you could choose?
Besides yellow (sometimes), the Green Lantern’s only weakness is internal: the ability to imagine, and the abilty to will, or desire, the imagination to become reality.
Points to you if you can tell me which Green Lantern who had a weakness to wood.
So of course everyone is going crazy for Lauren Bernat, The “Wii Fit Girl.” You may have seen the video of her on this very site, posted by John. She is the current “IT” Girl on the Internet. Now, I have noticed a trend with these matters. I’d like to call this the CYCLE OF IT, for lack of a better phrase.
1) The IT Discovered.
2a) The Everywhere IT: The IT suddenly is everywhere: Books, media, movies, t-shirts — everywhere you look, the IT is there. It is exciting to see the IT or be seen by IT. The IT gives you pleasure.
2b) Emulation of IT: The IT is put on a pedestal. Everyone wants to play Copy the IT. Some people just want to be more like the IT, others want to cash in and make money. For example, remember “Friends’” haircut? Or Cabbage Patch Kids?
3) Faux Backlash: Parodies are created that make fun of the IT. This is really an aspect of 2a and 2b above.
4) DISCOVERY OF FLAWS: It is much easier to see cracks in a trophy when there is a spotlight on it. The IT is discovered to be flawed. For examples of this, remember Pee Wee Herman (alas, he likes porno theaters)? or “Lonely Girl 16″ (who wasn’t real — just a serialized story).
5) The TRUE Backlash: The IT makes you sick. Suddenly no one wants to be or be near the IT. I think this occurs for two reasons: a) What we wanted now disgusts us. But more importantly: b) We are embarrassed for ourselves. We are embarrassed that what we coveted was flawed and perhaps we are frightened that we are flawed as well.
6) Looking For A New IT: The old IT is forgotten, perhaps for awhile, perhaps forever. In the meantime, what else is out there to be discovered? A new IT awaits!
In my mind the Cycle of IT is a bit of a drug trip for everyone around the IT. This cycle has the same effects that drugs do: a super high (2) followed by a crash (4and 5). Unfortunately, this drug is highly addicting.
A long time ago, The Cycle of IT could last years, decades even. But with the advent of the Internet, and superfast communication, The Cycle of IT has shortened drastically to months or even weeks or days. We are creating a society of junkies in need of a quick fix, knowing that a crash is inevitable.
So, this brings me to the following video. I’d say it falls nicely in step 3. What do you think?:
Viewing these sites often is a sure-fire way to slip into a diabetic coma. My wife and daughter (ok, I admit it… I do too) love these sites. If I want to play games for awhile, I just bring up one of them on our family computer, and say “Oh that is so cute!” They come running, and I get to go play games! :
4) Things That Make You Go Ahh: Filled with cute pictures. However, it’s not frequently updated, unfortunately.
3) Baby Animalz: Not sure how often this one is updated, because I just found it recently, but it sure has a lot of cute baby animal pictures. There are some ugly babies out there too (and this site has some of those as well).
2) I Can Has Cheezburger: This one has tons of cute pictures, and some funny captions, but I find a lot of the captions hard to read. It does have a cool feature: you can upload or choose a picture from the site and add your own captions to it. It’s a very popular site apparently. According to Wikipedia, this site has 1,500,000 hits per day! Wow.
1) Cute Overload: This is the best of the bunch: frequent updates, really cute pictures. When I first visited this site months ago, I thought the captions were completely annoying. However, they have grown on me. In fact, I am a bit of an addict. Their mascots are flying gerbils or hamptsters or something. They are priceless! I especially love “Caturday”, and the sound effects and actions they write out [shifty eyes for five min]. If you’re a guy or a gal who likes ”racks”, check out the “Cats ’n’ Racks” section.
