I gave the new book (which was sent to me free by the publisher) Ghosts of Rockville – Search for the Dominion Glass, by Justin Heimberg, to my daughter to read. When she was done, we sat down to talk about her impressions of the book. I thought her feelings might be more valuable in this case, than mine. After all, your son or daughter is going to be reading it, so why not a peer review? Here is what she has to say about the book in her own words:
Q: What is the book about?
A: “The book is about these four friends who are ghost hunters and they are on a mission to find the Dominion Glass.”
Q: What is the Dominion Glass?
A: “It is this crystal thing that can control ghosts. Basically, the leader, Jay, wants to use it find his father.”
Q: His father is missing? Oh no!
A: “He disappeared and has been pronounced dead and Jay has seen his ghost a couple times.”
Q: ”Sounds scary. Should I read this with all the lights on?”
A: ”Some parts are scary. And you probably should read it with the lights on because of this cool new feature Magic View, which you take this card which is in the book, and put it over certain pictures and you can see what the characters see.”
Q: Did you like the book?
A: ”Yes, I liked it a lot. I read it in less than 24 hours.”
Q: ”Yeah, you did. In fact, I gave it to you last night and you gave it back this morning. How did you do that? Read under the covers with a flashlight?”
<awkward silence>
Q: ”Must have been a great book. Um… moving on: do you want to read the next one when it comes out?”
A: “Of course. I want to read it as soon as it gets out. Like, right when it gets out.”
Q: ”OK, I get it! Anything that you didn’t like about the book?”
A: ”The technology wasn’t perfect with the magic view. You had to get it to the perfect angle to see what it was and move it around a little bit to see things. Plus since the technology is part of the book, if you lost the viewer, a lot of things wouldn’t be clear, and it would be pretty much really confusing.”
Q: So don’t lose the viewer is what you’re saying, right?
A: ”Pretty much. But a way to make sure that you don’t lose it would be to put it in the envelope at the front of the book or use it as a bookmark like I did.”
Q: But how was the magic view overall? What did you think about it?”
A: I thought it was pretty cool overall.
Q: So, out of five stars, how many stars would you give Ghosts of Rockville – Search for the Dominion Glass?
A: “Four stars.”
There you have it folks. The next book is called Journey to the Cliffs of Death. Sounds exciting. I know it will be on my daughter’s must-read list.
