The Reams Thereunder (available Sept 6, 2011), by Ross Lawhead, is a wonderful read. I just finished the Advanced Reader’s Copy, and holy cow I can’t wait for the next installment.
The Realms Thereunder is the first book of The Ancient Earth Trilogy. It’s also Ross Lawhead’s first full-length novel, though it feels like the work of a seasoned author. It’s a tight, exciting and moving story of about Daniel and Freya, two people who just might have to save the world with the help of a pair of knights who have been asleep for over a thousand years.
Unfortunately (for them, not for us), there is a great evil gripping the land. Magical creatures such as Ogres and Dragons have returned, and are sowing anger and resentment in their wake.
Daniel and Freya will have to travel through multiple worlds and a besieged ancient city in order to kill an immortal trickster.
The Realms Thereunder is told from two perspectives: eight years ago, and now. Eight years ago, Daniel and Freya got lost on a field trip to an ancient church. They discovered a secret tunnel and were missing for more than a month. Today, Daniel has been pulled to an Elfish world against his will, and Freya has been put under a spell while life changes around her. Will they be able to escape in time?
As I mentioned, this is an excellent book. It’s a fresh mix of British mythology, fantasy, and adventure. In short, it’s a page turner, and well worth your time.
