The Orb streams music wirelessly from your computer to any stereo in the house, and it does it all for less than $70.00.  In short, it’s the product I have been looking a long time for.

I was given a demo model, and have been playing with it a few days.  All I can say is this:  wow.

The Orb is near the top on  list of my all time favorite products.  It makes a great gift for any music lover.  If you have a respectable collection of digital music, you need this product.

The Orb is very easy to set up.  You plug it into your computer and follow a short set of instructions.  At the end, you plug the Orb into your stereo and then you are good to go.  You will be streaming music in about five minutes of starting the setup process.   It’s just that easy.

This device is perfect for me because my computer, which has all my music, is on a different floor from my stereo.  I have tried other products to stream music  in recent years, and just wasn’t impressed with the clarity.  Plus the setup for those products was insanely difficult as compared to the Orb.

So, you’re probably saying to yourself, “big deal.  The Orb streams music.  But you still have to run up and down the stairs to pick out songs.”  You’re wrong my friend, because the folks who made the Orb already thought of that:  you can control the Orb using your iPhone or Android phone.  It’s a free download, too.

The ap is amazing in itself.  You can use it to stream your itunes or other music.  Plus, it works with Pandora, Sirius (although I haven’t been able to log in yet), and internet radio.  It works with your playlists or you can also choose songs to play any time you feel like it.

Here is another cool feature:  you can even control the volume of the music stream using the ap.  Oh, one other great feature is that you can choose when to play songs (play now, play next, or play last).  I have always been driven a bit batty with my ipod / iphone in that I can’t line up the next song I want to play while listening to music on the fly.  I can do that with the Orb.

Some hints:

I actually did have a minor glitch setting up the Orb for the first time.  I typed in the wrong pass code the first time, and wasn’t sure how to reset it or even what I had done wrong.  So I ended up using the Orb’s live chat feature and spoke with a very helpful customer service agent.  In less than a couple of minutes he had me all fixed up.  It was the best tech customer experience I have had in a long time.

So here is how to  to reset your Orb for any reason (say you accidentally typed in the wrong pass code):  while it is plugged in, turn it over and press the little reset button with a pen tip.  Hold it until the led light goes solid.  This takes about 15 seconds.

Another thing:  when you are setting up your Orb, wait for the light to go green.  That means it is set up properly.

Update:  This product is one of my favorites of the year.  However,  I had some bugs in using it.  After some frustrations, I realized that it freezes up if you try and multi-task with your iphone when using the software.  My suggestion is that if you want to play music, play music.  Don’t try and use any other aps at the same time.

So, in summary, this is an awesome product.  It is well-worth paying full price.    Rating: ★★★★★

There is a mini-player that you can control from your computer.  Set up your playlist there and leave it alone!  Works perfectly.
