Take one part Truman Show and one part Wild Kingdom and you get the fictional TV show, Wired Kingdom.
In his debut novel, aptly named Wired Kingdom, Rick Chesler tells of an internet TV show sensation with a simple concept. Hook a GPS and a webcam to a blue whale, the largest animal to have ever roamed the planet. But when the blue whale captures the murder of a young woman on live internet TV, the race is on to solve the murder and locate the whale with the rest of the critical information to solve the murder. But everyone involved has their own motives. From a hired Mexican freelancer and his team of undersea thieves, to an eco-terror group bent on making a political statement, the plot is intricately woven and surprisingly sympathetic to all the characters.
At the center of it all is Tara Shores, the lone FBI agent sent to find the whale to put the murderer behind bars. The book is full of twists and turns and Chesler wields an adept pen. The book grabs you from the beginning with well defined characters, and navigates the twists and turns with the aplomb of a seasoned writer.
Remember when Michael Crichton was good? This is who I’m reminded of when I read Wired Kingdom. Chesler mixes fictional characters with fascinating information about blue whales and undersea life. Obviously Chesler has a passion for the denizens of the sea and he makes the true lone victim and hero of the book, the majestic blue whale. But he never preaches. Even if you’re not a die-hard environmentalist, you will get an appreciation for the majestic beast of the ocean.
This is a summer page turner. It won’t challenge your belief system and it doesn’t stray too far from the whodunnit genre. But if you’re looking for an entertaining read from someone new, I highly recommend Wired Kingdom.
