I am about half way through The Dead Janitors Club: Pathetically True Tales of a Crime Scene Cleanup King by Jeff Klima, which was sent to me by a kind rep for Sourcebooks.  I was a bit worried when I started the book, because in the first few pages, Jeff sounds like a complete jerk.  When the book begins, he has been working in crime scene cleanup for several years.  He’s seen (and cleaned)  things most people would faint over.  He’s world weary and just a bit jaded.  How did he get this way?  What is cleaning up after death like?  Finding out the answers to these questions is turning out to be a lot of fun.

If you enjoyed Sunshine Cleaning with Amy Adams and Emily Blunt (Sunshine Cleaning [Blu-ray]), you will like this book.  Heck, even if you didn’t  it’s still a great read.  Klima turns out to be a great author.  He’s funny, intelligent, and writes in a way that allows you to feel like you are watching over his shoulder as he goes about his grisly business.

You should know that this book is not for the faint of heart.  It’s pretty gruesome in some spots, as you might expect.  For example, the author gets hit in the eyeball with a piece of brain on his first job.  He has to clean up  after people who died while soaking in the tub (you’ll never look at pulled pork the same way — trust me), and many other poor souls who expired.  There are tons of very descriptive examples of how and why people died and the aftermath.

I don’t normally like non-fiction.  Most often, when I read true stories, I flash back to college text books and start to fall asleep.  But I have found myself drawn to The Dead Janitors Club;  it’s a page turner that easily rivals most  fiction out there.  It’s fast, funny, and generally a heck of a lot of fun.
