Defender Series for iPhone by OtterBox

The kind folks over at OtterBox sent me a Defender Series case for the iPhone 3G/ 3GS.  This thing is burly.  The thing I like most about it is that it fits securely over the iPhone and protects it from bumps and impacts without loss of iPhone functionality.  Right out of the box you can tell it is solid and well- made.  When you squeeze it, there is absolutely no give.  Most cases I have seen flop about like wet noodles when you squeeze them.  What kind of protection is that?

The case is designed to offer coverage for all the holes that the iPhone has.  The headphone jack, for example, has a little flap you open.  Additionally, a clear plastic sheet covers the screen of the phone.  This hasn’t proven to be an issue, however.  I was able to operate the phone as usual with no worries.

The one minor complaint I do have is that while it does fit in my pocket, it’s a bit bulky to keep there.  This isn’t a concern if you like wearing your phone on your belt; it comes with a clip on holder.

The cases come in white, black, pink, or yellow.   The yellow one, as you can see from the picture, looks a bit like a bumble bee.  I think that one is the coolest.  I do like my black case, though.

I also like that you can use the clip holder as a stand for your iPhone.  See the video below which shows how to put the case on and use it.

So if you are wondering if the Defender Series case is ideal for you, I listed some helpful situations below to help you decide.  Pick your personality from the list.

Perfect for:

Outdoor rugged manly type:  this case should defend your phone against hard knocks, drops (within reason), and the like.

Mummies:  the Defender Series keeps out dust nicely

Girly Girls with a Secret Adventuresome Inside:  Put this case in your purse, and pull it out for rock climbing.

Parents: your kid can toss the phone on the kitchen floor and it will still be protected(this actually happened)

People who clean their hands with oil:  chances are you drop just about everything you touch, and that’s OK.  The defender series can help you.  It’s easy to grip and can take a beating.

Not Perfect For:

70′s tight jeans wearing types:   it’s too bulky to put in your too tight jeans, which you probably shouldn’t be wearing anyway.  Thankfully, it has a belt clip.  If you do want great protection and like having the phone in your pocket as I do, check out the Commuter Series.  I love my Commuter Series case.

Divers who like making phone calls while submerged in water (really?  You want to make phone calls while diving or swimming?  Come on, folks!  Unplug occasionally!)

Astronauts on deep space missions:  Of course if you can get the coverage out near Saturn, why go ahead.
