Ableplanet has a new set of headphones available now, and they are pretty cool. If you are looking for a great gift for a geek this Christmas, I suggest picking up a pair. The True Fidelity (NC300W) pair I have on now are comfortable and produce excellent sound. They fit nicely over my ears and the noise cancelling feature really does cut out a lot of noise. With them off, I could easily hear my wife in the shower in the next room this morning. It was a dull, constant noise, kind of like it sounds in an airplane. When I put the headphones on and didn’t have the noise cancelling feature on, I could still hear the water running but it was quieter. As soon as I turned the headphones on, the shower noise went away completely. Amazing.
The sound for the True Fidelity NC300W headphones is excellent, in my opinion, especially with the noise cancelling on. With the noise cancelling off, it’s slightly muted , but turning up the volume on the in-line volume control fixes this nicely. I tested them against several types of headphones including 2 pairs of Sennheiser headphones (that don’t have noise canceling) playing “That’s What You Get” by Paramore, and frankly, I thought they compared nicely. Plus, this set is much lighter than the Sennheisers. It’s like wearing air.
I have tested other noise canceling headphones, and I think these are the best.
The headphones come with a hard plastic carrying case that shouldn’t get crushed in your carry-on luggage. In addition, they come with a variety of plugs including an adapter for the airplane.
Some things to think about before purchasing noise canceling headphones:
1) I have read that some people can hear a slight buzz when noise-canceling is on. This is because of how noise-canceling works and is a component of all brands. I personally can’t hear anything other than the music. However, if you have extremely sensitive hearing, you may want to test drive a pair at your local electronics store.
2) I suggest purchasing a pair that can be used without the noise canceling feature in place, as it uses batteries. These sound excellent when turned on, and deliver when off as well, though comparably sound a bit muted (they still sound better than the stock earbuds I got with my iPod). I have seen that some brands don’t work when they are off (some BOSE models, for example).
3) My wife says that they are very comfortable. However, like all over the ear headphones, they press against her earrings. I am having her wear them now, and she is smiling deliriously and wondering if they will block out the sound of the baby. I made a long sustained “whoooooooshing” noise and she asked if I wanted a kiss. I pantomimed that I was actually making a noise, and she said she couldn’t hear me. Obviously she’s not impressed with my attempt at airplane sounds.
In summary, these are a great set of headphones. They perform as good, if not better, than much higher priced headphones. Total Rating:
