I have a friend at work who just loves puzzles such as crosswords and Sudoku. Every day during lunch, I see her hunched over a puzzle. She believes in operating without a safety net — she uses a pen. I wonder if she would resort to using a pencil if I gave her one of my Kendoku books?
Kendoku is a combination of sudoku and KenKen puzzles. There are two sizes, 6X6 or 9X9. The rules are fairly straightforward: all of the numbers up to the grid size must appear in every row and column and every block. The second rule is that in every cage enclosed by a thick line, the target number in the top left-hand square of the cage is calculated from the numbers in all the squares of the cage. The calculation is addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division, as indicated by the symbol. Hah! It’s a heck of a lot of fun if you’re a puzzle or sudoku junkie like my friend. Want to give it a try? I have included a sample puzzle below. I’ll post the solution in a day or two.

If you love puzzles, please do consider picking up Kendoku Volume 1 or 2. Both are pretty awesome.
