There are rumors floating around that the next version of the PSP will not have the UMD drive. In fact, David Perry, Acclaim’s Chief Creative Officer said he’s certain. “I hear Sony FINALLY has the PSP 2. And thank goodness, they’ve removed the stupid battery-sucking UMD disc drive. I’m excited!”
Well, maybe he shouldn’t be so certain. Sony has come forward and said that the company is not going that way at all. John Koller, the Director of Hardware Marketing for Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) has now said the UMD format is “critical to us this year and beyond.”
This kind of statment makes a lot of sense: if Sony does ditch the UMD format in the next PSP they will completely anger all the folks who bought the first PSP and all the UMD formatted software. It would be a nightmare for Sony, and they don’t need any more nightmares.
This is a rumor that could potentially damage Sony now, however. Would you buy a current PSP knowing full well that all the games and movies for it will be obsolete in a year or two? Heck no!
If I was writing about Microsoft, I would now type something like this: “If M-soft is saying they won’t do this, that means they definitely will.” However, with Sony, who knows? They seem to have a history of creating new products and then suddenly dropping them (Betamax, SACD, etc.) with no thought to consumers who purchased them. They also have a history of creating products that only work in their machines, or work with a select number of other products (duo stick, UMD, etc.). So, we’ll see.
