Sid Meier’s Civilization Revolution is a good, though not great game for the DS. If you’re new to the Civ world, you may be more forgiving than I am. The story is that you start off with single settler in a black map with only a couple of squares showing terrain. From there you build cities and explore. In the game you will encounter other people including barbarians and famous world leaders. Some may be peaceful. Others may be intent on your destruction. There are several ways to win the game including building a spaceship to fly to another planet, conquering all the other civilizations, building a certain amound of wonders, etc.
The DS version of this awesome game is stripped down. For example, you can’t create a world on your own. Instead, you’re given a set number of scenarios. I miss this feature a lot. On the original Civ and Civ 2 (which I played way back in college many years ago!) you could create maps that were small, medium and large, and could choose the number of other cultures. I liked this because it spread out everyone and allowed me to grow my culture the way I wanted. This version feels crowded in comparison.
The other minor bummer is that the graphics look a bit shoddy, especially when compared to other DS games I have seen. The screen feels cramped, and sometimes it’s hard to see what individual pieces are doing. Everything looks a bit rough around the edges.
All that being said, this is still a fun game. Yes, it’s over-simplified. Yes, the graphics aren’t the best. But most of what makes the game so much fun is still there. Gameplay is fast and addicting, and the time goes by fast. So, with all its faults, it is still a good game. Yet I can’t help wishing it it came closer to being an excellent game.
