Durabook Notebook Is Durable Goodness

durabookIt surprises me to no end how many different things my six year old can break or spill things on.  For example, just this morning, I turned my back on her for less than 15 seconds to take my breakfast dishes to the sink, and she spilled her cereal bowl and glass of milk somehow.  Milk and fruit loops cascaded off the table, landed in her chair, her lap, and also fell on to the hardwood floor.  I’m still not sure how it all happened.  Nothing is safe around her.  She means well, but tends to run into things, knock things over, break things, color on them… you name it.

Sometimes, I wonder if owning something like this would be a good idea:  it’s called the Durabook D15RP notebook, built by Gamma Tech.  It’s supposedly spillproof, drop proof and shockproof.  It certainly looks a lot more sturdy than my current laptop, which happens to be completely dead at the moment.

Here is what the company says about the notebook: “The D15RP notebook is constructed of magnesium alloy and includes a shock-mounted screen and hard drive. With a hot swappable lithium ion battery with a life of approximately 4 hours, these units are certified to the MIL-STD-810F standard and tested to withstand drops, shocks, and vibrations. All DURABOOKS use an exclusive optical disk tray lock that prevents unintentional tray ejection due to dropping or vibration. The Durabook D15RP comes standard with internal TPM security and an Encryption Hard Disk for the ultimate in data security, a Smart Card Reader, a Webcam and Bluetooth capability. The D15RP notebook supports multiple wireless options including WLAN, WWAN, GPS and Bluetooth to ensure that users stay connected regardless of remote location.

The DURABOOK D15RP measures just 370mm (W) X 276mm (D) X 37.5~40mm (H) and weighs just 7.1lbs (or 3.2 kg) with a 9 cell lithium ion battery.”

Hmm.  For more information, check out their site by clicking here.

WIRED gave an older version of the Durabook Notebook a great rating.  Click here to see it.
