Pandora Radio is Awesome

Thursday, September 25, 2008

I have been listening to Pandora Radio a lot lately.  It is really awesome!  Pandora lets you choose a favorite band or song and then creates a radio station of sorts around it.  You can give thumbs up or down for each song that plays, and pick your favorites, all free of charge.  You can skip a certain number of songs each hour, so if there is something you really don’t like you can hit fast forward.  It even has links to iTunes and Amazon in case you want to buy that particular song or album.

As I said, it is free of charge.  Sort of.  I have actually bought several songs that I really enjoyed.

Pandora Radio is part of the Music Genome Project.  This is from the site:

Together we set out to capture the essence of music at the most fundamental level. We ended up assembling literally hundreds of musical attributes or “genes” into a very large Music Genome. Taken together these genes capture the unique and magical musical identity of a song - everything from melody, harmony and rhythm, to instrumentation, orchestration, arrangement, lyrics, and of course the rich world of singing and vocal harmony. It’s not about what a band looks like, or what genre they supposedly belong to, or about who buys their records - it’s about what each individual song sounds like.

Since we started back in 2000, we’ve carefully listened to the songs of tens of thousands of different artists - ranging from popular to obscure - and analyzed the musical qualities of each song one attribute at a time. This work continues each and every day as we endeavor to include all the great new stuff coming out of studios, clubs and garages around the world.

So, check it out!  Pandora Radio

I used to listen to Pandora but it didn’t play enough good songs for me. I recently discovered Slacker and have happily made the switch. It’s also free, has a great selection of pre-programmed stations or you can make your own, either by an artist or as many artists as you want. You can also heart or ban songs (and artists) and you can tune the station to by age, popularity and other settings.

They also have a portable device that allows you to take your stations with you (portable internet radio). Pretty cool.

You should give it a try and see what you think.
