Anthem of a Reluctant Prophet is, what I imagine to be, a vivid snapshot into current teenage life. It is the story of Luke, a sixteen year old who fortells the death of close friend. This moment begins a series of such experiences. For a teenager simply trying to fit in this certainly makes him a bit of a celebrity, and outcast. Every teenager has something that makes him or her different. Luke’s is just of the supernatural kind.
I found this story not so much about Luke’s skills as a prophet but rather the average struggles of a somewhat average teenager in America. The accounts of attending concerts, dealing with girls, suicidal friends, and adults who want something different for him all work to provide the reader with a whole picture of Luke’s existence. The book also provides a sense of closure with Luke’s unique gift.
Overall, this book is an extraordinary account of an average kid from the Midwest.
