I must say this: since the late 80's, when I was still a teenager and really discovering and truly beginning to appreciate movies, I had the Video Movie Guide (now named the DVD and Video Movie Guide) on hand. Mick Martin and Marsha Porter delivered movie reviews like no other. I've seen the Eberts, Maltins, Reeds and Videohounds come and go. The difference between these and The Video Movie Guide is simple: fairness. They rated genre versus genre, style versus style and, this is the VERY IMPORTANT part, they took into account how a fan of a certain genre or sub-genre might feel about a particular movie. If you were a fan of say Friday the 13th (which I unabashedly am) you read their reviews and realized that they didn't bash the movies because they didn't like them, they could truly appreciate what a fan might see in them. Even if I didn't agree with their reviews (i.e. Fight Club and Way Of The Gun) I still appreciated their input because I knew they looked at it from more than simply hating a certain genre or actor, they defended the good and brought light to the bad. No other movie reviewer that I have read can do that. Most are either genre, actor, director or fan appeal oriented. Most seem to only side with the Academy because it will make them seem more legimate. In actuality it makes them seem like a tool; an untrustworthy, snake-oil salesman trying to make you believe what they believe. I respected this duo for their sheer audacity to watch a movie and point out its' good qualities alongside the crap. When, in 2007, I went to the bookstore, at the end of October to find the newest edition, I was very disheartened to find out that they would no longer be released. Let me close with saying that this publisher has done a GREAT DISERVICE by no longer releasing this guide. It's a shame that Maltin, Ebert, Reed and the Videohound get to continually realease extremely biased (and yes I understand the fact that a review is a biased concept, but at least this duo took into account fans perception alongside their own) versions of movies which convince people to never take a chance on something obscure. Porter and Martin you are extremely missed and if you never return take the humble thanks of a man who appreciated the way you steered him toward some great, awe-inspiring movies that I may have never witnessed.

Here is what I wrote them, more updated and changed things around from what I wrote before...

The DVD & Video Guides by Mick Martin and Marsha Porter.

I love the DVD & Movie Guides by Mick Martin and Marsha Porter. What can be done is make two editions, a new one featuring movies from 2000-2009, and an edition of classic movies, including the 70’s, 80’s, 90’s, and movies made before those decades. The reason being is, it would be too thick for a full updated version, so two editions, would be great. I use the guide everyday, and currently using the 2007 edition for a project I am working on. I use the internet as well and various movie websites, but this book is a quick lifesaver when I need information in a hurry, and would love to see a new edition very soon, and would be even cooler if it contained on some pages photos of random movie posters (b/w) of some movie that is a big blockbuster, something like what a dictionary has. Please Ballintine Books/Random House, bring back everybody's favorite DVD & Video Guide for 2010/11. You may have to go with the two edition version approach, different covers and titles to get it done. I would buy both for sure, whatever the MSPR price is. Thanks. -Tim

I sent this Little Note to Random House: The 2010 DVD & Video Guide by Mick Martin and Marsha Porter. Really !!! What is the matter with you people ??? People buy this Guide because it is the best !!! We are Movie People and WE are Book People too. YOU are Publishers, so Publish US a Proper "2010 DVD & Video Guide by Mick Martin and Marsha Porter" in book Form, and We will buy it. We will look Movies up and We will Write in the Margins as We have always done. We will tell our Friends of this Guide and They will buy it and You will Profit from Selling US the Guide.... Do You Understand this or are You Mentally Challenged by this Concept ??? My Friends and I are Waiting 3 long years now, but You have Forgotten US ! But we do not Forget that you will not Publish Our Guide We Love So Much, So maybe We Begin to Forget to buy everything You Publish...... Sincerely bigjim

I can't believe they've been dumped! The Martin and Porter Guide was the best, most complete, well-indexed, easily usable and well-written of any movie guide... EVAR! Maltin's book is a pile of shite, if you'll pardon the french. Seriously bummed!

Wish they would start publishing The DVD/Video Movie Guide by Martin/Porter, again. I have the 2002 edition. I am long overdue for a current edition. I have read the other comments and agree they should start publishing it again. It is a great source of info for me when I look at purchasing DVD's for my collection. Please forward this to Random House. Look forward to seeing a new edition in the future. I think it is better than going to the computer all the time. Quick reference at your fingertips almost instantly. Thanks.

Please, Please, Please, publish a new version of Mick Martin and Marsha Porter's "DVD and Video Guide". This was a standard Christmas Gift for my husband and when I had to substitute it for the "other" he was very disapointed. In fact, he continues to use the last 2007 Martin and Porter DVD Guide and yes, it is December 2009 and falling apart. Everyone is correct. Martin and Porter deserve to own this review. It's the dictionary of DVD reviews. Last time I check they still print dictionarys...??? Thanks!
