It is time to take action!  You may have noticed that you can’t find your favorite dvd review guide, The 2008 DVD & Video Guide by Mick Martin and Marsha Porter anywhere.  That is because it isn’t being published!  Simply put, this is the best source of excellent moview reviews out there.   Help us get it in stores again!

The DVD & Video Guide is published by Ballantine Books, aka Random House.  According to comments and emails I have gotten, somebody over there decided we can get our reviews online and so a book isn’t necessary.  I completely disagree.

What you can do:

Let them know you want the book back!

Contact Ballantine Books / Random House Here

This form will ask you where you came from.  Please put us down:  www.geekscribe.com

I put in a request to the link provided. Thank you for making it easy to contact them.
I know it’s been over a year, but maybe there is still a chance that it can be published in the future.

I really miss the dvd and video guide by mick mason & marsha porter.  I find it far superior to the other guides.  I am crossing my fingers that random house will reconsider not publishing the guide, or I will not buy their publications.  thanks

Thanks so much for giving people a link to contact Random House.  I’ve contacted them previously, but will again.  I find myself browsing through my 2007 guide nearly every day, and used to buy a new edition yearly, as well as purchase them for gifts.  WE MUST get Mick Martin’s book published again!
Flood Random House with emails, everyone!

    Hi all

I’ve written about this issue here:

    http://lior20.wordpress.com/2009/01/06/bring-back-the-dvd-movie-guide/

My small contribution. Don’t know if it’ll help, but I hope Mick Martin can see it and maybe show it to a publisher or two? Ah, lofty dreams.

    Thanks.

Please publish — it simply is the best.  Random House, y’know, considering the publishing industry’s challenges to produce quality books that also sell, you really are missing the opportunity that this book represents.  Mick & Marsha keep pursuing this as I must have your advice & I will wait for the return of your DVD & Video Guide.

Thank you for providing information about our favorite movie guide.  I have left a comment for Random House and encourage others do the same.  I am shocked and saddened that this book is no longer available.  Please bring Martin & Porter back!

Man, no wonder I can’t find the book anywhere.  Only other one I can find is by Leonard Maltin or whatever his name is.  His book sucks big time!  I want book back!

I recently picked up a copy of Maltin’s 2009 video guide with the intent of buying it.  I was desperate for a video  guide that was more current that my 2006 edition by Martin and Porter.  However, before purchasing it, I decided to scan the index of actors at the back of the book.  Not only was there a disclaimer explaining that actors from the “classic” era were not listed,  but it was apparent that even current stars (I randomly searched for Viggo Mortensen) failed to make the cut.  The experience reinforced my original opinion that Maltin’s book was not worth it; I put it  back on the shelf.  I, too, hope Mick Martin and Marsha Porter republish their guide.

I was doing a general Internet search for the latest Martin and Porter movie/video guide and came across the geekscribe site this evening.  I was very disappointed to learn that this series is not being published again and wanted to take the opportunity to request that you reconsider.  Our family doesn’t buy the guide every single year, but every couple of years we do, and now we’re at 2006 looking for 2009 or 2010 and can’t find it.  The Martin/Porter rating system is so much more reliable (by that I mean, in keeping with my experience) than the others I checked out on the same shelf at Borders.  What the guy at geekscribe says about Maltin is accurate–the Leonard ratings are way too low, and so I for one can’t possibly trust whatever reference points Maltin is using (that is, I can’t rely on his perspective because it is so dissimilar to mine).  Martin/Porter seem to hit it a lot closer to mainstream than some of the critics, who seem to have forgotten to take the point of view of the public, which is not up there on the essayist’s pedestal.

Please, please publish this again. My 2006 one is getting really outdated now and I use this book for something where I need movie trivia at a hands notice. I don’t want to get up and go to the computer and take the time to look up every movie or actor when I can just open it up alphabetically and there’s the answer. I need a new guide! Please!

Pleeeeeze publish Mick Martin and Marsha Porter’s DVD and Video guide again. There are no other guides that list the actors and directors and their movies [available on VHS/DVD, etc] in such user-friendly format, and as such, this guide is FAR more valuable than any other one for reference. If you can’t remember the movie name but have ONE actor’s name, you can find the movie [and vice versa]. I have one at work and one at home. These particular guides are GOLD. Please consider publishing this again. You can’t always have the internet available for reference [and I assume you may be thinking about IMDB??] The printed version is just as valuable for it’s instantaneous access.

I am one more for the list of those who badly miss the Martin and Porter Guide. I have been making do with the last 2007 version but I cannot believe that this guide wasn’t continued. Perhaps Martin or Porter no longer wanted to do it?

I had intended only to write a few words but got a little too enthusiastic… however, I believe it is warranted.

I am one of the many many avid users of your sadly lamented late Martin and Porter DVD and VIdeo Guide. After reading the thread on Geekscribe and finding out that it was decided to stop publishing the guide, as “The same information is available on the internet” I was shocked, to put it politely. Martin and Porter’s reviews, succinct, accurate, and highly useful, are not available on the internet – indeed it seems Marsha Porter is nowhere to be found! The information is indeed available on the internet, but so is much other information, books of which are still published. The idea of a book is that one has information always to hand, does not need to turn on a computer in order to find the name of an actor – when one sits down to watch a movie, one leaves this goldmine of information on the coffee table in front, ready to hand when we see that familiar face; one hears of a movie and can quickly and easily find its worth. Internet reviews are by no means always reliable, often written by opinionated and innaccurate home viewers. I guess the point is that this resource has far superior integrity to what you assume can replace it.
I love the internet as much as the next person – I’m seventeen, for goodness’s sake – and yet even I cannot fathom gaining information from no other source. The other guides out there simply do not cut it. Please allow us once more to access this highly valuable resource.

There is, indeed, no comparison between searching online for movie content information and quickly finding the remarkably efficient, entertaining and interconnected information in Mick & Marsha’s formerly annual DVD & Video Guide. It is sorely missed — and this is proven by the continued sales of inferior guides such as Leonard Maltin’s.

Mick Martin and Marsha Porter’s “DVD and Video Guide” is by far the best dvd source on the market! FAR superior to Leonard Maltin’s. Much easier to use and much more info! Please publish a new edition. Hasn’t been the same w/out it! Many thanks!

Please, Please, Please, publish a new version of Mick Martin and Marsha Porter’s “DVD and Video Guide”. This was a standard Christmas Gift for my husband and when I had to substitute it for the “other” he was very disapointed. In fact, he continues to use the last 2007 Martin and Porter DVD Guide and yes, it is December 2009 and falling apart. Everyone is correct. Martin and Porter deserve to own this review. It’s the dictionary of DVD reviews. Last time I check they still print dictionarys…??? Thanks!

Wish they would start publishing The DVD/Video Movie Guide by Martin/Porter, again. I have the 2002 edition. I am long overdue for a current edition. I have read the other comments and agree they should start publishing it again. It is a great source of info for me when I look at purchasing DVD’s for my collection. Please forward this to Random House. Look forward to seeing a new edition in the future. I think it is better than going to the computer all the time. Quick reference at your fingertips almost instantly. Thanks.

I can’t believe they’ve been dumped! The Martin and Porter Guide was the best, most complete, well-indexed, easily usable and well-written of any movie guide… EVAR! Maltin’s book is a pile of shite, if you’ll pardon the french. Seriously bummed!
