Best Video Game Weapons Ever?

These are my favorite weapons ever in video games.  If you can think of better ones, let me know!

11) Laser Tripbomb from Duke Nukem 3D (PC):  Place these babies on walls and around corners and laugh when your deathmatch buddies find them!  Duke Nukem had a lot of great weapons and this is just one of them.   The one tiny issue was when you happened to forget where you placed a bunch, or spawned into a nest of them.  Instant respawn.

10) The Portal Gun from Portal (XBOX 360):  This really isn’t a weapon, since you don’t use it on anyone.  However, this is one amazing gun.  With one button, you open an entry portal, and the other you open an exit portal, and you can travel instantly between the two.  Sound easy?  Not really!  You’ll have to find your way around and over obstacles using the gun.  It’s a hard game, but using this gun makes Portal amazingly fun.

In particular, Portal has awesome humor.  Did you know that in the near future, you wil be able to buy one of the “Weighted Companion cubes” from the game?!  It’s true!  Someone also created a facebook profile for it, and also a tribute website.

9) Gravity Gun from Half Life 2 (PC / XBOX 360):  Use this gun to grab items such as barrels and throw them at unfortunate enemies.  Sweet.

8) Land Shark Gun from Armed and Dangerous (XBOX / PC):  Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to play this game on account of the folks over at Microsoft haven’t written the software emulation for it.  However, it looks totally cool:  you shoot the gun and a shark burrows into the ground, streaks to where your enemies are, and devours them like the cover picture of Jaws!  Talk about flipping sweet!

7) Leech Gun from Prey (XBOX 360 / PC):  This gun sucks its ammo from various energy nodes placed throughout the ship that you are traveling through.  Press the alternate fire button, and the gun shoots a beam that leeches energy from the node.  The neat thing is that there are several different types of ammo (and it only stores one type at a time), and each type has a different use and effectiveness on your enemies.

Prey is an amazing, fun, game and this gun is a large part of that.

If you haven’t yet checked it out, you really should. Prey is the most amazing head trip of a game I have ever played.  You can walk on the floors and ceilings, and aliens are shooting at you from every angle.  In addition, the monsters are something to behold.  The music, graphics, gameplay voicework and story are all stellar.  Check it out!

This next weapon is perhaps the most graphic and disgusting (but still very enjoyable to inflict) weapon I’ve ever used in a game.  It is the…

6) Anal Probe Gun from Destroy All Humans! (PS2): I’ll leave this one to your imagination.  It is hilarious, however, as long as you’re not a recipient. There have been at least two games in this series.  You play an evil alien intent on destroying the human race.  Using a variety of weapons, including a space ship and the aforementioned anal probe, you accomplish missions, steal brains, tip cows, and generally have a great time.

I would really like to see a PS3 version of this series.  You can find the originals for around $20.00 as greatest hits.  If you’re looking for an all-around weird but fun game, this is it!

5)  Shrink Ray Gun from Duke Nukem 3D (PC):  Duke Nukem was one of my favorite games for a long time.   I sure wish they would release Duke Nukem Forever… sigh.  In any case, the Shrink Ray Gun was so much fun, especially during deathmatch.  Shrink your enemies, then squish ‘em!  It was even cool when someone else used the gun on you… everything got really big and then…. SPLAT!  Hours of fun were to be had with this gun alone.

The next two weapons are from Gears of War.  This game is pretty slick as a whole, and has a cool story.  In fact, they are working on a movie version of it.  You play Marcus Fenix, one badass dude.  He is in charge of Delta squad, and they are fighting the Locust Horde, an alien species that burrows into the ground.

4) Hammer of Dawn from Gears of War (XBOX 360):  Unfortunately this gun only works outside on a clear day.  However when it works, it is amazing.  It’s tied to an orbiting satellite.  The actual gun paints a target for the Hammer of Dawn Satellite to shoot at.  Leave your target up for a few seconds, and a column of light lances down from the sky to take out your enemy and everything else nearby.  Simply amazing!

3) Lancer Assault Rifle from Gears of War (XBOX 360):  This baby is a rifle and a chain saw.  Oh man.  It makes me sweat just thinking about it.  Shoot far away enemies, and cut em down like wood when they get close.

2) Light saber from any one of dozens of Star Wars Games (All Platforms).  I first used this in Dark Forces 2, Jedi Knight, and since that point several times in other games.  Especially when used with other force powers, this weapon is handy to have around.

1) BFG 9000 from Doom / Doom2 / Doom 3 (PC).  For when you simply have to annihilate an entire room of bad guys all at once!  When I used this gun I had to stop myself from laughing maniacally every time I hit the “fire” button.

Unfortunately, this gun runs out of ammo fast,  so you have to use it carefully.  This is the mother of all video game guns, and my favorite weapon of all time.

So, there you have it… my all time favorite weapons.  Did I miss any?  Let me know about it by commenting.
