Before we get into solutions, here is a funny video. This might make you feel better (actually, that is a complete lie… it won’t really). It is quite funny.
You can view some symptoms of the Red Ring of Death Here.
Look, I want to make this clear: I AM NOT AN EXPERT. If you use these methods, your XBOX 360 may:
1) Explode.
2) Burn up.
3) Die completely.
In addition, your warranty will be invalidated. So, if your XBOX 360 is still under warranty, I’d suggest you call Microsoft immediately at 1-800-4-MY-XBOX (in the US and Canada). Max, their computerized customer service person is very helpful and friendly.
OK, here are some possible solutions. Again, I don’t reccommend any of them (except for the first one):
1) Call Microsoft! They can fix it for $140.00 or so. If the error is the Red Ring of Death, they might even do it for free! Here is a link to their warranty description. Of course, they expanded their warranty to three years for the Red Ring.
2) The Towel Trick: Seriously. Wrap several large towels around the XBOX 360 for about 30 minutes while it is running. See the video for this solution here. I believe the reason this is supposed to work is that it re-melts certain solders that were made during the construction of your xbox. Over time, as your XBOX heats and cools, things start to become warped, and certain things that are supposed to be connected separate. So, super-heating it by wrapping it in towels, will cause everything to melt just a bit and fall into place.
2) Buy a fixing guide on ebay. I just searched on ebay, and found 71 people willing to sell me a fixing guide. A bunch of these were actually people selling their broken 360’s. Your results will vary!
3) Are you pretty handy with tools and have an xbox that has no warranty? This guy gives exact instructions to fix your xbox 360.
4) Slap Your XBOX 360 Silly: Actually, yes, here is the video for it. Who knows what these guys are saying… it’s pretty obvious it works!
OK, so there are loads of other solutions out there. Good luck. I myself had an XBOX 360 die. So I feel your pain!
