This is a new series where we examine sci-fi and fantasy movies you may or may not have heard about… movie that scare us or make us laugh, or think or cry. These are movies we feel no self-respecting sci-fi/fantasy collection should be without. The October 2007 Geekscribe Movie Club movie is: The Quiet Earth

The Quiet Earth is about a man who awakes to discover that he is alone. Completely alone. There are no birds, no animals, no humans. Or are there? Is he truly the last man alive? What caused this catastrophe? How did he escape it? Watch this movie to find out.

This is a stunning film. Unfortunately, in the US, it is impossible to find this on DVD. Lucky for me, I happened to find it on tape at a garage sale a few years ago. I have “forced” nearly all my friends to watch it. The start off by scoffing, but end up amazed.

It was made in New Zealand in 1984, on a shoestring budget. It was released in October of 1985. It stars Bruno Lawrence.

The only reason I can’t give this movie 5 stars is because the special effects haven’t aged very well. That being said, there still are a couple of spots which the f/x is pretty stellar.

Rating: ★★★★½

There have been rumors this title might be released on DVD. If it is, I highly recommend you purchase it. If not, and you still have a working VCR, you might be able to find it as a rental. Good luck with this one! I think it’s worth it, especially if you like movies that make you think.

Watch the trailer here (I wouldn’t though… it is very cheesy, and gives away key plot points.)
